课程介绍

The course will read Kant's Critique of the Power of Judgment (1790) as a treatise in reflective teleology. The four meetings of the course will address the four forms in which the principle of purposiveness, formally introduced in the third Critique, manifests itself as the fourfold root of teleological unity. First, the architectonic unity of nature as a system is explored in the Introduction of the third Critique. Second, the aesthetic unity of subjectivity is investigated in the work's Analytic of the Beautiful and its annex, the Analytic of the Sublime. Third, the logical unity of natural ends is assessed in the Analytic of the Power of Teleological Judgment of the third Critique. Fourth, the ethico-teleological unity of nature and freedom is explored in the work's Methodology of the Teleological Power of Judgment. Throughout the course will scrutinize the specifically critical character of reflective teleological thinking in Kant.
