Proposal for Initiating the World Philosophy Round Table

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Department of Philosophy at Peking University, philosophers from 60 universities all over the world are holding a three-day “global meeting of chairs of philosophy departments” on the theme “Philosophical Education and Contemporary Society”.

Participants have become aware that in the age of globalization philosophical education and research in many areas of the world have encountered challenges of commercialization, political ideology, cultural identity, multilingualism, and the twin problems of moral indifference and fanaticism, etc. The traditional way of doing philosophy has also undergone dramatic changes. For example, philosophy is no longer simply a love of wisdom without considering utility, but requires more practical knowledge; it is no longer a sort of speculation apart from or even above concrete sciences, but is now more actively engaged in trans-disciplinary research; it is no longer embedded merely in a native culture or in a single tradition, but is inevitably involved in cross cultural studies and dialogues. Challenges from outside and changes inside are providing tremendous opportunities for philosophy to take a step into the next stage of its development, instead of falling into crisis and decline.

Considering that no philosophy of any one tradition, school or domain or, in any one area, nation or university could successfully develop itself, we realize that global collaboration should be absolutely necessary for maintaining the historical heritages of philosophy, for stimulating new ideas, for advancing philosophical education and for exerting public influence. For the common interest of the international community of philosophy we propose to establish the World Philosophy Round Table. A body of leading philosophers will come together to discuss philosophical matters in a regular way.

The World Philosophy Round Table is designed to be a collaborative colloquium of leaders (chairs, directors, deans or appointed persons) of philosophical institutions (departments, institutes, faculties, research centers). It is annual or biennial, being hosted alternatively by a participating institution. Possible topics are as follows.

---- Introduction and assessment of hot topics in philosophy in one’s own area or university, influential publications, or other academic activities
---- Reports of new pedagogical programs, students’ interests, important changes of curriculum, different ways of teaching philosophy, etc.
---- Multilateral or bilateral projects on student exchange, faculty exchange, joint research, and international symposiums, etc. Projects can be determined either in the framework of universities’ collaboration, or through the agreement among certain participating institutions
---- Mobility of information, such as exchange of published materials, access to electronic sources, interlinking of websites, etc.

The Round Table is global and open to all leading philosophical institutions over the world. However, for the sake of efficiency and due to limits of organizing expense, a new participant requires a recommendation of at least two formal members from the previous year.

In order to keep the running communication, electronic newsletters are to be issued regularly between meeting times of the Round Table. Each participating institution is requested to appoint a contact person for sending information and receiving the newsletter. The Department of Philosophy at Peking University is willing to edit all issues of the newsletter before the official opening of the Round Table.
