"Martin Heidegger’s radical critique of technology has fundamentally stigmatised modern technology and paved the way for a comprehensive critique of the contemporary Western society. However, the following new interpretation of Heidegger’s most elaborate and influential inquiry into technology, 'The Question Concerning Technology', is able to shed a very different light on his critique. Heidegger’s phenomenological line of thinking concerning technology in fact also implies a radical critique of ancient technology, the fundamental being-in-the-world of humans and it culminates in a reassessment of biotechnology. This revision of Heidegger’s arguments claims that 'The Question Concerning Technology' asserts four historically different and increasingly profound genealogies of modern technology. The interpretation presented here emphasizes Heidegger’s own more or less explicit arguments in favour of continuity in the history of technology and thereby judges a technological change on the verge of modernity as a confirmation of an essential continuity. According to the following interpretation of Heidegger’s notion of technology, humans have always strived to develop modern technology and are essentially modern".
