Evolution & Ethics
Kelly James Clark, Calvin College

The time has come, E. O. Wilson, bravely trumpeted, “for ethics to be temporarily removed from the hands of the philosophers and biologicized.” Can ethics survive biologicization—can it be grounded in evolution alone? Drawing upon our evolutionary history, evolutionary ethics finds within our pre-human ancestors some of the basic ingredients of human morality. From mammals, for example, we can see more social instincts, ones that mimic altruism, that provide the impetus for the development of human morality. In this essay we will look at the prospects and promise of evolutionary ethics. We will first consider the nature of morality and then various ways that evolutionary ethicists have sought to explain human morality.
