The Role of Newtonianism in the French Enlightenment


讲座提要：Newton was revered as the founder of Reason in eighteenth century France but there was disagreement over what the nature of his science, and indeed, what his achievement was.

在十八世纪的法国，牛顿被奉为理性时代的奠基者，但对于牛顿科学的本性、甚至对于牛顿的成就究竟是什么等问题却观点不一。

所有报告和讨论将在北京大学外国哲学研究所（老化学楼）227房间进行。


Prof. Rob Iliffe 介绍：

英国萨塞克斯大学（University of Sussex）科学史和思想史教授。

1990 年剑桥大学博士毕业，先后在伦敦大学学院（University College London）和帝国理工学院（Imperial College London）任教，2007 年迄今在萨塞克斯大学工作，其间于2012-2013 年任加州理工学院（Caltech）Searle 讲席教授。

曾任多个知名学术刊物的编辑或编委，包括History of Science（2002-2008）、Notes and Records of the Royal Society （2000-2006）、Nuncius and Isis（2004,2008）、Canadian Journal of History and Annals of Science （2001）。

专著有A Very Short Introduction to Newton, (Oxford University Press 2007)（《牛顿新传》，南京译林出版社，2009）、Priest of Nature: the Religious Worlds of Isaac Newton (Oxford University Press 2014)（《牛顿的宗教世界》）等。

主编Science and Literature, 1660-1834, vols. 6-7: Astronomy (London: Pickering, 2004)（《科学与文学》第6-7 卷）、Newton Biographies, 1700-1900, v1: the Eighteenth Century Texts (London: Pickering, 2007) （《牛顿传记种种1700-1900》）、The Cambridge Companion to Newton, 2nd ed.,(Cambridge,CUP 2014)（《剑桥牛顿指南》）等。发表思想史、科技史论文40 余篇。

Iliffe 教授是国际知名牛顿研究专家。1998 年以来，一直主持英国牛顿项目（the Newton Project）。该项目是受英国艺术与人文研究委员会（AHRB）、英国皇家学会等机构支持的一个以全面实现牛顿文献数字化为目标的大型跨国合作项目。
